Quantum computers exploit superposition and entanglement to solve specific classes of problems — cryptography, materials science, drug discovery, optimization — that classical computers cannot handle at scale. The technology is still early: error-correction, qubit count, and operating temperature remain unsolved at commercial scale. But the largest cloud providers and several pure-play startups are racing toward "quantum advantage," and breakthroughs increasingly appear in peer-reviewed journals.
For investors, exposure today comes mostly through (a) public cloud giants whose quantum divisions are buried inside larger businesses and (b) a small set of pure-play pioneers with high volatility. National-security implications mean defense contractors and government-aligned tech firms also play.
